Participants in this continuing course will acquire the necessary skills to learn Torah texts in its original
language. We will focus on Hebrew reading, as well as beginning grammar skills and building vocabulary. As we
strive to accomplish these goals, we will complete the Book of Ruth, a dramatic and compelling narrative of
lovingkindness, as our text.

Parshanut Workshop:
The Joseph Narrative
Explore the approaches and methods of various medieval Bibical exegetes (parshanim) through the
story of Joseph. Compare and contrast both textual and topical allusions, including family dynamics and
Joseph/Judah parallels. This course will allow for both directed chevrutah time in which to explicate the
subtleties of the text and anticipate the commentaries' questions, as well as the benefits of analysis by the
instructor in the styles of exgesis and use of midrashic sources.

From Here to Paternity -Models of Parenting and Grandparenting
The Bible is filled with human relationships that impact on our understanding of the Jewish family and
family dynamics. We will analyze selected texts from Genesis, II Samuel and II Kings, and discuss themes of
sibling rivalry; favorite sons and forgotten daughters; family crisis; and biblical family values as they
assume a contemporary dimension. Classical commentary (midrash, Rashi, and medieval exegetes), as well as
modern sources will serve as a prism through which the message and meaning of the text are refracted.
This course is offered in conjunction with the Women's Division of the
Combined Jewish Philanthropies.

Sefer Daniel
Sefer Daniel's challenging imagery, esoteric themes, and difficult language make it one of the Tanakh's
most inaccessible books. Through deliberate study of its text, with special emphasis on learning
rudimentary biblical Aramaic, we will aspire to understand the sefer and appreciate the important place
it has held in the history of Jewish thought.

aggadah from both the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds. Join our continuing study of Tractate Berachot which
presents rabbinic views on prayer. Our goals will include: analysis of language, theology and biblical exegesis,

Studies in Midrash Aggadah: Pesikta d'Rav Kahana
In this course we shall explore the riches of aggadic literature through an in depth study of a single
midrashic collection: Pesikta d'Rav Kahana. Pesikta d'Rav Kahana was compiled in the land of Israel around
the year 400 CE, approximately one hundred years before the Babylonian Talmud. It contains exegeses and homilies
on the Torah and some haftorah readings for holidays and special Shabbatot. We will use this text to explore the
imaginative, moral and theological worlds of the Rabbis. Special attention will be given to developing students'
reading skills to improve their ability to read aggadic texts on their own.

The Milk of Human Kindness: Marital Obligations between Husbands and Wives
The fifth chapter of Masekhet Ketubot is largely concerned with the complementary obligations shared by the
partners in a Jewish marriage, including housework, nursing children, and physical intimacy.
We will consider the nature and boundaries of these obligations in a course designed for students with a
reading knowledge of Hebrew, but little or no experience with Talmud study. By treating both legal and
anecdotal material, we will examine the multifaceted nature of the talmudic text, while emphasizing structure,
Aramaic technical terms, and legal concepts.
This course is supported by a grant from the Brookline-Brighton Service Development Fund of the
Combined Jewish Philanthropies.
